Russia-Chinese Gas Deal - Moscow Looks East
On May 21 Moscow and Beijing finally completed negotiations on a USD400bn gas deal which promises to redirect Russia's energy exports from Europe to Asia. Russian leaders have portrayed the agreement as a success, but Moscow found itself in a difficult negotiating position and was forced to cave in to China's price demands. Our analysts explain what the deal means for Russia, China, and Europe, as well as for other gas exporters as far afield as Canada and Australia.
